The Basics of Wine

What Is Wine?

10 questions · 4 min

Wine is one of the world's oldest beverages and is made from fermented grape juice. Simply put: grapes are crushed, the juice ferments with the help of yeast, and sugar is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide. What remains is wine.

Wine can be red, white, rosé, or sparkling. The flavour depends on which grape variety is used, where the grapes are grown, and how the winemaker has worked. The year on the label, called the vintage, tells you which year the grapes were harvested. Wine has a living complexity that makes every bottle unique — and that is exactly what makes it so fascinating to explore.
