White Grapes

Chardonnay

10 questions · 4 min

Chardonnay is the world's most widely planted white grape and is grown successfully in almost all wine regions. The grape is neutral in itself, meaning that terroir and winemaking dramatically shape the final result. In cool Burgundy it delivers citrus, chalk and yellow apple with high acidity and a long finish. In warmer Australia and California it can produce tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. Oak ageing adds vanilla, toast and butter notes. Malolactic fermentation softens acidity and creates a creamy texture. Finding the style you enjoy comes down to understanding origin and winemaking technique.
