White Grapes

Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer

10 questions · 4 min

Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer are both mutations of older grapes but have taken entirely different paths. Pinot Grigio – the same grape as Alsace's Pinot Gris – produces in north-east Italy a fresh, light and neutral wine with lemon and white peach. In Alsace it ripens into fuller, oily Pinot Gris with honey and smoky notes. Gewürztraminer is the ultimate expression of an aromatic grape: roses, lychee, ginger and a distinctive spicy finish are its hallmarks. The wine is often full-bodied with low acidity. Alsace is Gewürztraminer's proudest home, and the grape's rich perfume makes it immediately recognisable.
