These four are the world's best-selling sparkling wines and they represent distinct styles.
Champagne
Produced exclusively in the Champagne region northeast of Paris. Based on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, usually as a cuvée (blend of vintages). Traditional method with long lees ageing gives complexity and finesse. Blanc de Blancs is pure Chardonnay; Blanc de Noirs is made from dark grapes.
Cava
Spanish sparkling from Penedès using the traditional method. Main grapes are Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada, though international varieties are now permitted. Good value with nutty, apple-like notes.
Prosecco
Italian (Veneto/Friuli) and made by the tank method from Glera. Light, fresh and fruity with white flowers and green apple. Affordably priced.
Crémant
French sparkling from outside Champagne, made by the traditional method. Crémant d'Alsace, Crémant de Loire and Crémant de Bourgogne are the most common. Often excellent quality at a lower price.
