The Rhône Valley stretches south from Lyon towards Provence and divides into northern and southern halves. The Northern Rhône is Syrah's homeland: Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage yield dense, peppery reds, while Condrieu — from Viognier — is one of France's most aromatic white appellations. The Southern Rhône is dominated by Grenache-based blends. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with its 13 permitted varieties, is the region's flagship, producing generous, high-alcohol reds. Tavel is France's best-known rosé. Climate differences between north and south are dramatic — continental in the north, Mediterranean in the south.
