Sangiovese is Italy's most planted grape and the king of central Italy. In Tuscany it produces Chianti Classico — fruity, high-acid red with cherry and tobacco notes. Brunello di Montalcino, made from Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello), is one of Italy's most celebrated wines with long ageing potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano sits between the two. Super Tuscans is an informal term for international-style blends such as Tignanello (Sangiovese + Cabernet). South of Rome, Campania features indigenous Aglianico in Taurasi — dark, powerful, and age-worthy. Primitivo in Puglia is genetically identical to Zinfandel.
