Portugal is a country of remarkable indigenous grape diversity and strong individual styles. The Douro Valley is home to port — a fortified wine made from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and others. Ruby and Tawny are the most common styles; Tawny ages in cask and develops a nutty, oxidative character. The Douro also produces excellent dry table wines from the same varieties. Vinho Verde from northern Portugal is a light, fresh wine with a gentle natural spritz, low alcohol, and bright acidity — often made from Alvarinho (the same as Albariño). Alentejo in the south yields richer, generous reds in a hot, dry climate.
