Sonoma

10 questions · 5 min

Sonoma County borders Napa to the west but differs markedly in character. The region is more diverse and stretches to the Pacific Ocean, creating cooler microclimates. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive along the cool Sonoma Coast and in Russian River Valley, where morning fog from the sea keeps temperatures low during ripening. Zinfandel — one of America's most historic grapes — is found in the warmer inland parts of Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma wines, like all quality American wines, are grape-labeled and often cite a sub-appellation to signal terroir.
