Grape Labelling in the New World

10 questions · 5 min

One of the most fundamental differences between Old and New World wine communication is the label. In the Old World — France, Italy, Spain — the label typically states the region: Bordeaux, Barolo, Rioja. The consumer is expected to know which grapes grow there. In the New World — Australia, the USA, Chile, New Zealand — the grape variety is stated clearly: 'Shiraz', 'Cabernet Sauvignon', 'Sauvignon Blanc'. This makes it easier for beginners. In the USA at least 75% of the juice must be the stated variety; in Australia the threshold is 85%. A sub-region is sometimes added to signal quality and terroir.
